Seeking: Communications Manager

(Contract to run through 22 March 2016 with possibility of extension)

USAID Transition Initiatives for Stabilization (TIS) program

The Transition Initiatives for Stabilization (TIS) program is funded by USAID and responds to the complex crisis that has evolved in Somalia and Somaliland. The overall program goal is to mitigate conflict; to promote stability and community cohesion, and to strengthen citizens’ relationships with government officials. TIS implements quick impact activities linked to longer-term stabilization goals.The TIS program is currently seeking a skilled, diplomatic, effective, and highly motivated Communications Manager. As Communications Manager, you will provide support to the entire TIS program, including the Chief of Party, Senior Grants Manager, and M&E Manager. S/he will be expected to liaise regularly with the TIS program team to stay up to date on program activities, upcoming events, and program successes.

The Communications Manager will oversee the Senior Communications Officer, Regional Multimedia Specialist, M&E/Information Officers in Somalia, and international interns.

This position will be based in Nairobi.

Qualifications and skills sought

  • A degree in Mass Communication, English Language/Literature, International Development or other relevant fields.
  • Minimum 6 years’ experience in international development, 2 years of which in a supervisory/management position
  • Experience in media, reporting, political journalism, and political analysis required
  • Knowledge and experience with USAID compliance reporting rules strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of the political context in Somalia strongly preferred.
  • Familiar with activity and grant reporting methods and systems.
  • Experience with deadline-driven writing assignments. Able to produce high quality documents under tight deadlines.
  • Experience in strategic communications with local government partners and planning awareness campaigns
  • Fluency in written and oral English.
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office suites.
