DAI, a global development consulting firm, seeks applications from qualified candidates for the Kenya Integrated Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (KIWASH) project. The Kenya Integrated Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (KIWASH) Project is a five-year, USAID-funded project to improve lives and health through the development and management of sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene services in Kenya. Its purpose is to institutionalize catalytic models of sustainable service delivery for accelerated water and sanitation access in nine target counties and to improve complementary hygiene behaviors.

Summary of Primary Duties
KIWASH intends to engage the services of a Service Provider Capacity Building (SPCB) Specialist to work closely with the Service Provider Capacity Building team in Nairobi and Kisumu in the development of sustainable WASH services, more specifically in supporting capacity building efforts for small and medium WASH Enterprises aimed at improving their operations and facilitating market-driven improvements in service delivery. This support includes, but is not limited to, such areas as financial management, record keeping, customer service, marketing, business management and regulation. This support will require the SPCBS splitting their time between Nairobi and Kisumu.

Essential Duties

  • Collect baseline data for potential WASH enterprises using real-time online platforms such as EpiCollect5, in order to get a deeper understanding of their operations and services, determine their future goals and propose a clear plan of action to help them achieve their desired future state;
  • Assist the Service Provider Capacity Building Managers (Eastern and Western) to prepare reports for classroom training workshops, and to follow up on agreed milestones with WASH enterprises under incubation;
  • Support the SPCB Managers (Eastern and Western) during coaching and mentoring visits to WASH enterprises to help them internalize and apply the learning from classroom training workshops;
  • Collect necessary details from WASH enterprises for development of Concept Notes for KIWASH financing, under the guidance of the SPCB Manager(s);
  • Work with appropriate local partners in target areas to identify needs to develop and deliver business development services to potential private WASH product and service providers;
  • Increase direct involvement of the private sector in WASH and strengthen the commercial orientation in the sector overall;
  • Conduct analysis of sanitation value chain capacity needs, develop sustainable programs to meet those needs, and deliver programming;
  • Support strategic partnerships with the private sector and other development partners to assist in commercializing appropriate, promising technologies in the WASH sector
  • Assist the SPCB Manager(s) to compile the contributions of the SPCB team for required reports e.g. weekly briefs, quarterly and annual reports;
  • Participate in meetings with partners and other stakeholders as needed;
  • Any other tasks as required by the supervisor(s).

Supervisory Responsibilities
The Service Provider Capacity Building Specialist will have no supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications

The Service Provider Capacity Building Specialist should meet the following requirements:

  • Bachelors’ degree in Engineering, Development Studies, Public Health, Social Sciences, Business Management or any other relevant course with a bearing on water and sanitation issues;
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in implementation of water supply and sanitation projects in urban and/or rural settings in Kenya;
  • Have a good understanding of business processes and project management with sound entrepreneurship skills;
  • Demonstrate good knowledge of the water sector reforms in Kenya, including the role of County Governments in water service provision;
  • Knowledge and experience in monitoring and evaluation of water supply and sanitation interventions;
  • Be good in documentation/ report writing, with high proficiency in computer applications;
  • Be able to work with minimal supervision.

Base of Operations
This position will be based in Nairobi and with occasional travel to Kisumu and other KIWASH counties.

Reporting
The Service Provider Capacity Building Specialist will report to the Service Provider Capacity Building Manager (Eastern) who will in turn report to the Deputy Chief of Party.
