Activity Background

The USAID Responsible Investment and Trade Activity is a five-year (2020 – 2025) activity that will work with a broad range of international and domestic private sector firms and civil society actors to promote civilian ownership of the Myanmar economy by increasing the share held by responsible, accountable, and transparent firms. Through the Activity, USAID will increase trade and private sector investment. To attract and sustain investment and trade, the Activity is supporting firms operating in or entering the market in Myanmar to improve corporate governance, business transparency, and competitiveness.

Project: USAID Responsible Trade and Investment Activity (the Activity)

Reports to: Senior Private Sector Manager or the designee

Description:

DAI seeks an environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) expert with experience in environmental and social impact assessments to support its USAID Responsible Investment and Trade Activity (the Activity) in Myanmar. The Activity aims to promote private sector civilian ownership of the Myanmar economy by increasing the share held by responsible, accountable, and transparent firms. It engages international and domestic private sector firms and civil society actors across multiple sectors to facilitate investment, trade, and business partnerships, and to strengthen regional economic integration, and improve business accountability, transparency, and competitiveness in Myanmar.
To contribute to responsible investment and trade in Myanmar, the Activity is looking to increase the number and size of responsible, accountable, and transparent businesses in Myanmar. The Activity aims to do this by building the capacity of and helping organize local ESIA companies and individuals to support Myanmar businesses improve their transparency, accountability, and compliance with Myanmar’s and international environmental and social (E&S) standards. Under the direction of the Senior Private Sector Manager, the ESIA Specialist will provide senior level expertise in support of the Activity’s objectives in this cross-cutting technical area. The Activity may also support companies to improve their transparency, accountability, and compliance with E&S standards, in addition to building the skills, networks, and capacity of local ESIA companies to support the development of companies in this area.

The Consultant will perform a variety of tasks related to ESIA in Myanmar, which may include, but not limited to the following:

  1. Provide advisory and support in the implementation of training opportunities to private sector ESIA companies and individuals in Myanmar
  2. Facilitate regional networking for ESIA companies and individuals through the establishment and management of an online network
  3. Support creation of a data portal that consolidates a range of publicly available information required for conducting ESIAs in Myanmar

Qualifications

  • BA/BS in Economics, Business, Environmental or Sustainability studies or a related field or relevant experience; Advanced degree in Business, Economics, Environmental or Sustainability studies is desirable
  • Demonstrated knowledge of environmental and social impact assessments in Myanmar or Asia
  • Private sector experience, especially in Myanmar
  • Fluency in English; Burmese is a plus
