Overview of the Position:
The Private Sector Capacity Lead manages all activities under Objective 2 of RITA to improve domestic corporate governance, business transparency, and competitiveness of firms. S/he will work within a team to identify and justify the approaches that will contribute towards achieving RITA’s objectives. S/he is responsible for defining and overseeing technical assistance in the following technical areas: building capacity in businesses in corporate governance; comply with new regulations, and access to finance. In addition, the Private Sector Capacity Lead will oversee the provision of support to a variety of business support organizations, and building capacity of business journalists, and support women business leaders..
Project Background
The USAID Responsible Investment and Trade Activity (RITA) aims to promote civilian ownership of the Myanmar economy by increasing the share held by responsible, accountable and transparent firms. RITA will engage international and domestic private sector firms and civil society actors across multiple sectors to facilitate deals and business partnerships, strengthen regional economic integration, and improve business accountability, transparency, and competitiveness. The project will use a facilitative ecosystem-strengthening approach that will increase trade and investment and improve corporate governance practices in Myanmar, supported by a $3.8 million Investment and Technical Assistance Facility that will allow RITA to deploy a flexible, tailored mix of pay-for-results subcontracts, grants, and technical assistance to partner firms. This structure facilitates our private sector engagement strategy, avoids market distortion, and prioritizes sustainability by building local capacity within the business ecosystem.
Roles and Responsibilities:
The Private Sector Capacity Lead will work within a team of approximately 28 professionals, and will lead in the following tasks:
· Conduct primary and secondary analysis, and identify and design specific interventions in the above fore mentioned topics.
· Conduct capacity building, training design, and institutional development for local business associations and chambers of commerce to better serve local firms.
· Design training activities, workshops, grants, and other technical assistance to build the capacity of businesses to improve corporate governance
· Develop trainings, grants, or contracts to support local firms’ compliance with new regulations.
· Hold trainings and workshops with civil society organizations and media to improve capacity for business journalism or business advocacy.
· Prepare and publish policy briefs to stimulate public and private sector dialogue.
· Organize policy and regulatory dialogue events in concert with project partners.
· Maintain relationships with economic, policy, and legal organizations and associations.
· Contribute to preparation of RITA contract deliverables, including workplans, quarterly and annual reports, and other ad-hoc USAID requests.
Minimum Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in Business, Economics or a related field
· Minimum of 10 years of experience in one or more of the following: business consulting and business development, trade or investment, private sector development, regional economic growth, or development. Advanced degree preferred.
· Demonstrated leadership and strong management capacity.
· Ability to analyze and identify problems, and design solutions based on evidence.
· English and Burmese fluency is required; additional experience in local dialects a plus.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Experience preferred working in the private sector and on international donor-funded projects incorporating trade economics, capacity building, marketing, infrastructure support, institution building, and policy advocacy.
