Honduras: Climate Change Management Specialist

DAI seeks a Climate Change Management Specialist to serve on the Building Resilience into Ecosystem and Livelihoods (BREL) Activity that aims to strengthen integration among democracy and governance, economic growth, education, environment, and nutrition activities which all contribute to poverty reduction. This activity will look to contribute to building resilience into services and livelihoods in western Honduras. The Climate Change Management Specialist responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • He/She will work closely with the COP in defining technical approach on help people and institutions anticipate, withstand, and respond to climate change and variability as well as to minimize, cope with, and recover from climate-related impacts.

  • The primary role is to assure results are being achieved in increased vulnerable population’s capacity to adapt to climate variability and change work with local and national institutions in implementing a Climate Information System for Western Honduras (CISH). This system should provide demand driven climate services and should work closely and feed into the Government of Honduras’s existing climate information system. The delivery information systems must take into consideration how that information shall be perceived, understood and used; and that ultimately, the information shall be distributed through existing inequitable social systems.

  • Work with existing meteorological stations to improve their performance and promote the installation of low-cost technologies in communities to gather information at a local level and feed it into the CISH. These technologies shall generate data that meets government specifications.

  • Work with Contingency Permanent Committee, COPECO and other public and private institutions to strengthen their information system structure, ensuring data quality in order to better inform decision makers at all levels.

    Education: Master’s degree or higher in environmental science, NRM and/or agriculture, meteorology

    Work Experience:

  • At least 10 years professional experience with a proven thorough understanding of climate modelling, climate information systems and their application.

  • Experience working in Central America preferred.

  • Supervisory Experience:

  • At least eight years of progressively more responsible supervisory work experience, including: direct supervision of professional and support staff;

  • quality evaluation of staff performance and deliverables; and

  • Project management under contract(s).

    Language Proficiency:

  • English: ILS Scale9 Level 4, Advanced Professional Proficiency in Reading, Speaking, Listening and Writing is required.

  • Spanish: ILS Scale9 Level 4, Advanced Professional Proficiency in Reading, Speaking, Listening and Writing is required.
